We are a DEFRA registered egg producer and have had an excellent fertility rate with these chickens and ducks, however, we cannot guarantee hatching after the eggs have been through the postal system. Eggs can also be collected in person from our farm in West Wales from £1 per egg ( 3 minimum ).

Eggs will be unwashed (important to maintain viability) and sent in polystyrene boxes. We suggest that you allow the eggs to settle for 24 hours before incubation.

We often have chicks and ducklings available also - please call.

Chicken eggs will only hatch after 21 days in a still air incubator set to 39.4º C (103º F) or in a forced air incubator set to 37.6º C (99.7º F). Humidity from day 1 to day 18 should be 55 - 60%. Humidity from day 18 should be 70%.
Eggs should be turned at least 5 times a day until day 18.

Duck eggs will only hatch after 28 days in a still air incubator set to 38.6º C (101.5º F) or in a forced air incubator set to 37.5º C (99.5º F). Humidity from day 1 to day 28 should be 70%. Eggs should be turned at least 5 times a day until day 24.

Newly hatched chicks and ducklings require a non slip surface in the brooder, otherwise some may develop splay legs as their feet slip to the sides causing hip dislocation on low-friction surfaces such as newspaper or plastic.
Please see non-slip chick mats above at £2.00 each with free postage.

Hatching and Fertility. All our poultry have been checked for fertility by hatching eggs from them. We have an average ratio of 1 male to 3 females and all the breeds are separated.

Just because eggs do not start to develop, does not necessarily mean that they were infertile - many people mistakenly assume this to be the case. There are in fact many variables involved in the process of posting and hatching eggs, any one or more of which could reduce the viability of the eggs.  Unfortunately, we cannot control any of these once the eggs have gone to the post office. Some are:

  • Washing eggs - this removes the protective protein coating on the shell.

  • Time taken in transit.

  • Rough handling in transit (more likely with first class post in automatic postage
tumblers - this is less likely with special next day delivery)

  • Temperature variation in transit

  • Temperature variation in incubation including that caused by power cuts.

  • Incorrect humidity during incubation.

  • defective ventilation of incubator.

  • Failure to turn eggs during incubation.

  • Position in the incubator - some incubators have hot or cold spots if they are still air type.
